The Diamond Guide

Understanding the 4Cs

Every diamond is graded on four essential qualities. Understanding cut, color, clarity, and carat weight will help you choose a stone that is both brilliant and true to your budget.

Cut
Cut refers to how well a diamond's facets interact with light, determining its brilliance, fire, and sparkle. A well-proportioned cut - not too shallow, not too deep - returns the most light back to the eye. We grade every stone from Excellent to Fair so you can compare brilliance at a glance.
Color
Diamond color is graded on a scale from D (completely colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). The closer to colorless, the rarer and more valuable the stone. Most of our diamonds fall within the D-J range, offering exceptional brightness at a range of price points.
Clarity
Clarity measures the presence of internal inclusions or external blemishes, graded from Flawless to Included. Many inclusions are invisible to the naked eye even at higher magnification. We recommend VS2 or better for a clean, eye-clean stone that balances beauty and value.
Carat
Carat is a measure of a diamond's weight, not its size, though the two are closely related. One carat equals 200 milligrams. Two diamonds of the same carat weight can look different in size depending on how they are cut, so weight should always be considered alongside cut quality.
Caring for your diamonds
Clean your diamonds with a soft brush and warm, mild soapy water to keep them free of oils and dust that dull their sparkle. Store loose stones and diamond jewelry separately in soft pouches to prevent scratching, avoid contact with chlorine and household chemicals, and have settings inspected annually by one of our jewelers.
